My husband worked in corrections and was lucky enough to be able to retire last year with a pension at 49. We went to Florida in December. My mother spends 6 months a year in Zephyrhills and my daughter and son in law live in Tampa and we've spent a lot of time in Florida and thought we knew what to expect. But we had trouble finding an RV park since neither of us were anywhere near 55. We finally found a nice one, but we are younger than everyone else by decades.
I love older people, but by the time the end of March rolled around I couldn't wait to get back home. Our favorite time of day was after 6pm, when the roads, restaurants and stores were deserted :B We loved the weather and had a good time but we are dragging our heels going back down.
Most of the guys my husband worked with can't retire. They have enough years in but are generally on their second families, with a new family of little kids and paying child support on the older ones.
My husband does have a seasonal business or he would be bored I think.
TL;DR We are too young to be snow birds but we go because we hate the Buffalo winters
