- ksg5000ExplorerMay depend on where you camp. I would recommend locking the RV anytime your not at the campsite regardless of where .... but outside of Calif (no offense intended) I have never hard anything stolen from my campsite. I tend to camp in Western USA/Canada.
- PawPaw_n_GramExplorerThe other folks at the campground and the location give me a suggestion about security.
1) Always lock the RV when you are away. Especially important at fuel stops.
2) If there are a lot of young kids around, I make sure things like bicycles are locked to the rig.
3) I don't really worry about my portable satellite dish.
4) I was more concerned about keeping things secure at a Broward County park next a busy urban street than a COE campground in Texas. (And TY Park in Hollywood is an excellent park/ place to go - just too many non-campers around.)
I've never found a place where RVers take stuff, but I've heard a few stories.
Just remember a campsite isn't your home or back yard. High value stuff needs to be locked up and out of sight. - monkey44Nomad IIBeen camping for over fifty years all over USA and Canada ... never once had anything stolen.
We generally put things away, and lock the doors, but not always. Sometimes coolers or grills or chairs etc left out. Bikes out locked with a chain. - ScottGNomadWe lock the doors but never the compartments. There's nothing in there that's worth the damage they would do wrenching it open.
We've been camping for more than 30 years. Only once did I see (and confront) two drunken women stealing firewood from my neighbor.
I think it's very rare. - mabynackExplorer III was checking into a campground in the Florida Panhandle once when the police showed up. It seems a camper had left her door open and her purse on the dinette and someone went into the RV while she was inside and stole her purse. I've heard people complaining about things being stolen from their sites, but it hasn't happened to me. I always lock my door unless I'm standing outside using the BBQ.
- Reader1ExplorerWelcome! We have camped for 34+ years and have never had anything stolen. We do keep our bikes locked and lock the 5th wheel when we are gone. This has been asked many times over the years and I remember reading about thefts of coolers, some lawn chairs, and mostly beer I think. The funniest one I remember reading (although not funny to the ones it happened to) was reports from several campers that beer, chairs, firewood, steaks and other food was taken. I believe they found the chairs and remnants of the firewood but the steaks and beer were all gone.
- Campfire_TimeExplorerIn nearly 30 years of camping I have never been a victim, nor know anyone who has in any CG we've ever been to. We've never felt the need to lock everything up at night. Occasionally depending on the number and demeanor of any kids in the CG, I may lock our bikes (they aren't cheap ones), but usually there is no need to. We do lock our trailer when we go somewhere.
There was one Dane county, WI CG that we used to go to that had issues with kids stealing coolers looking for beer. That was nearly 20 years ago, I have no idea if there are still troubles there.
I also know of some incidents over a weekend at Potawatomi SP, WI in the early 2000s. It suspected that it was a group of local kids. They were walking up to unlocked vehicle in campsites and taking whatever was loose. I was not there, my dad was. But nothing was taken from him.
So yes, it happens. More important, it's rare. - LantleyNomadWhile I'm sure there is an occasional incident. There are very few thefts at CG's.
Most camper watch out for each other. Yes their will be teenagers taking beer or bikes but even then it is rare. Be reasonably cautious and you'll be fine.
RV are not very secure anyway. All it takes is a large screwdriver to gain entry to RV's. - magnusfideExplorer IIMore than 4 decades of camping experience here. Whenever we are off the campsite we lock our rig. Bikes are locked to our rig. Chairs, table, and grill are left outside on site. Never have had to lock a power cord but with the prevalence of copper theft these days it would not surprise me if it becomes a necessity.
- RoyBExplorer IICampers always looks out for other campers... I know we do...
Anything of value is inside my truck. They go where we go... That includes my 2KW Honda Generator haha...
Keeping things out of sight and out of mind works for us...
I left one time at Westmoreland just down the road from here where we live and when I got home I couldn't find my hand ax. Just so happens we back to Westmoreland the next weekend and there it was laying by the tree where I left it haha...
Another time we was camping at ELKMONT in the Smoky Mtns and only two os us campers were setup in one of their loops. The guy across the loop road from me was also in POPUP camper and had chained his 3KW Honda generator to a tree. I guess both of us had left the camp site around 2PM to go get some supplies from the local town of TOWNSEND. When I got back I found I couldn't drive down the loop road for a felled tree over the road. I just drove around to the other side and got to my popup trailer. Sure enough someone in broad daylight cut the small tree down where the neighbor had his 3KW Honda chained to the tree. Honda generator was gone... About that time the neighbor came back from town and there we both stood looking at the cut down small tree... geesch.
I had to do his batteries every morning with my generator until I left a few days later...
True story - It does happen
