Passport can definitely be a good deal for the occassional stopover, which the OP said was his goal. As others said, be aware of the restrictions as in most cases it really is only available for a couple days per stay. When I checked around at specific parks I found that the restrictions were rather onerous, and I never did get the pass.
The OP asked about Thousand Trails (TT), and I did the TT zone pass last year and was very pleased with it. As said, it is not an attractive price for the one or two day stopover, but it is an incredibly good deal for a multi-day (up to two weeks) stay on a regular basis. I believe those doing hardcore boondocking will agree that it is nice to have a place where you can relax and recharge at a prepaid, reasonable rate.
