Once you join, it may not be easy to quit. Thousand Trails and other (essentially) time share type memberships may only make sense for full time, and I'm not convinced I'd save a dime, given my camping style which is mostly urban docking.

We are members...started with the Zone Pass and upgraded to a full membership a few years ago. We use it all the time....we plan our trips based on the Resorts available. Now, that's not to say we love all the Resort's but we do have our favorites.

So far, these include Lake of the Springs, Ponderosa, Rancho Oso, Tahoe Valley, Wilderness lakes, Oakzanita, Idyllwild, Palm Springs. We also get use of RPI Parks at a discount which we also use and again have our favorites.

We live in So, Calif and this year we will be hitting Park's we haven't before including some in Oregon. We think it's a great deal for us and for anyone who uses the system enough to be cost effective. Have Fun.....

PS....we are not full timers but I think we were in the TT system approx. 150-175 days last year! Cost effective...YES!!

Thanks. I'll read the getting out fine print.
I'm more concerned about quality of experience issues.
I might have to bit the bullet and just decide it might be one of life's lessons, good or bad, that I won't learn until I just jump in and hope for the best.
I think I can get 15 days a year, or more, out of my regional TT campgrounds as long as they aren't so horrible that I would just choose not to go at all. They say the first 30 nights is free with the membership, so even at 15 nights it's still a bargain from my current financial perspective.

That's good to know. You've stayed at some of what will be my go-to campgrounds: LOTS, P, TV.

The quality issue is pretty subjective....if you go in thinking your getting into a system that has only 5 star "Resorts", you will be extremely disappointed. On the other hand, go into this with your eyes wide open and you'll get a good value for your dollar. As I stated, some Park's are better than others and some sites within these same Park's are better than others but the same can be said for any Campground. All I can say is we have enjoyed it very much and NO, I don't work for TT....:B

I assume that by mentioning "giving it a try for a year", that you are referring to a Zone Pass. I think TT has a 2 for 1 special going on now for $545.
I am a full TT member, but have met lot of Zone pass holder. All seem to like it. Especially those that stay at the TT Yosemite Lakes park while visiting Yosemite. The Zone pass fee almost offsets the cost of staying in a commercial CG for a week.
Granted, some of the northern California parks gets mixed reviews. I guess some of us have mixed opinions on about every thing.

If your travel palms warrant it, I would also pick the Zone Pass for Washington and Oregon. Lots of nice TT Parks there. We really like the Park in Seaside, OR.

I don't remember ever seeing a lake there. I have only been there once, was not one of our favorites. Be aware that from the campground it is still an hour to Yosemite Village. We frequent LOTS and San Benito. San Benito had gone down hill for a while but the new manager is really making a push to improve the property back to what it used to be. I have been going to TT preserves since early 80s. Most went downhill for a while but seem to be improving. Only downside is they have become more crowded, especially on holiday weekends. Russian River is also not a favorite because the sites are old and small so we have a hard time finding a spot we can fit into. Most of the Oregon and Washington preserves are nice, but it has been several years since we've been to those.
