We carry a Honda 2000 full of fuel and a 2 gal can of gas all the time when we travel, with either the trailer or the camper, winter or summer. We have plenty of solar on both rigs for our needs, but having the generator just seems to be good insurance for a lot of situations that could arise. For the run south we have the generator, full propane tanks, lots of food, and plenty of drinking water in jugs....used to live in Northern BC years ago and travelled remote roads in winter with small kids so always had to be prepared...never got over it I guess.....also remember a few years back when Troopers had to use snowmobiles to get food & gas to motorists caught in a storm and stranded in snow along a strip of I-5 in Or e gun....so, it can happen!
