traveling the blue ridge parkway

We are planning on traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway starting at the south end. Any recommendations, suggestions for RV parks, great sites to see, etc. This trip will begin from California in May 2017.
Thanks in advance.
  • Several years ago we drove the Skyline Parkway and the Blue Ridge from VA all the way to the end near Cherokee, NC.
We thought it a trip of a life time. At that time we were in a 25' Class C and not towing a car.

Then too.....I am one of those guy's that likes to say "I did that".
  • I've not seen a part of the parkway that wasn't beautiful. However, since you are planning a year in advance, make reservations! We are camp hosts at a National Forest campground just off the parkway and, since the weather started warming up, we've been full almost every night.
  • We've done it from Front Royal, doen Skyline drive through the Shenandoah NP and continued on the Blue Ridge Parkway all the way to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. One of our best trips and certainly the most photographed. If you have the time it's a great trip. Just plan on a slow trip and enjoy.
  • As much as we love the Blue ridge Parkway, (we live right near it and ride our bikes on it); You might not enjoy riding the entire length.
We made that mistake once and never again. The speed limit for most of it is 45MPH and there are some places where it is only 35.
The best part, and the most scenic is the section Between Julian Price Lake and Craggy gardens.
Make sure you make the side trip, (it is free) up to the top of MT Mitchell which is the highest mountain east of the Mississippi River.
Another good take in is Grandfather Mountain, (which costs)

If you like hiking the Tanawa trail near the viaduct is a great one.
You can do portions of it from pull offs along the Parkway or the entire way leaving from the campground at Price Lake.

Make a stop at the Mineral Museum, (free) at Spruce Pine, which is small but shows all of the minerals native to the area.
