Trip: Albuquerque to Yellowstone, back through Grand Tetons

Going up to West Yellowstone through Moab. We will stay at West Yellowstone area (and NP) for a few days. Then plan to go south to Grand Tetons NP....we will then head south back to Albuquerque and pick our way through western CO...Any good suggestions for West Yellow stone area and Grand Tetons (north entrance)??? We can live with what I find on the way there and back....p.s. I am an AVID fly fisherman!! We have a 36" fifther, and will need to dump and fill every few days (DW likes her water usage!!)...thanks!!!
  • I have always preferred the amenities of private campgrounds, so I will offer some of my favorites along your travel route:
West Yellowstone KOA, yes a KOA. A real resort type campground, indoor heated pool, premium sites have full concrete pads and patios, lovely patio tables and a private adult swing. Really nice park.
In Jackson, Wy, we like The Virginian. Not much of an RV park, clean, adjacent to a hotel with hotel privileges, but a perfect location for touring Jackson.
If you get to Durango, CO, Aspen Rose is delightful.
Monument Valley is worth the trip, and Gouldings RV is the only game in town, very nice, but distant to everything except Monument Valley.
South Grand Canyon I recommend basecamping in Williams AZ. The Circle of Pines KOA is great, big trees, indoor heated pool, very large sites, dirt, but well maintained.
    Just some ideas, Happy Trails.
  • We really like Fishing Bridge RV Campground because it is inside Yellowstone National Park and has full hookups. Tight spaces, but you will have no problem with a three foot fiver. In Grand Tetons National Park we like Colter Bay RV Campground for the same reasons. It does have more room than Fishing Bridge. There is a fairly small campground somewhere on the north side of the park that has sites on a nice stream. I just can't recall the name but you should be able to find out more about it on the park's web site. Have a great trip.
  • Why would a person go to Jackson Hole to find a campground when there are many of them in Grand Teton, such as Colter Bay, Gros Ventre, Lizard Creek, etc. If you are planning on staying in Grand Teton, go to Colter Bay and either park in the campground or at the RV park. The RV park requires reservations but you might be able to get in if you hurry. It's a full service RV park. The campground is very inexpensive if you have a senior pass at about $11.50 per day. Gros Ventre is similar to Colter Bay in that it is dry camping but has lots of spots, over 300, in which to camp. Last spring Colter Bay was mostly closed early in June so we stayed at Gros Ventre and saw a couple of moose wander through our camp site about three feet from the FW and also saw a bunch of Mountain Sheep as well as a great deal of wildlife around the campground. I prefer Colter Bay since we fish when we are there and it's right on Jackson Lake in which we fish. Gros Ventre is quite a ways away, but you still get to see a bunch of the Park when traveling to the upper part of Grand Teton. Plus, it's very close to Jenny Lake with good hiking, etc. You can't go wrong staying in Grand Teton, but I would suggest that staying in Jackson Hole would be a mistake from an adventure standpoint, it's just a tourist trap with a whole bunch of people around, especially in the summer months.
  • My post above was very poorly written and I wanted to try to improve it. I checked the Yellowstone web site map and I think the campground I mentioned is Pebble Creek or Slough Creek in the northeast part of the park.
  • Thanks all....I will look into these...we are tripping in late July for fishing and beauty!! Fished Slough Creek as a teen with my Grandparents when we stayed there rv'ing...it was 1976ish...long time ago!!!
