Trip Report - Jellystone NP

Just got back from Jellystone and it was a great trip.

Warning!! there are construction zones. Firstly from the South Entrance in the area of Lewis Lake resurfacing is in progress. They do about 3 miles a day on one lane only. This means there is controlled one-way traffic about 100 vehicles at a time. Wait time up to 30 minutes.

From Norris Junction to North Entrance, Complete repaving has started and for several miles in two places you will be on very rough gravel, dirt, and slow traffic.

I think we covered just about every important feature in the time (more than a week) and there are some difficult sections.

The Midway Geyser Basin and Biscuit Geyser Basin has so much congestion that traffic is a slow crawl and people park in every direction on both sides of the road, plus the parking lots can be controlled access by Ranger.

In the Lodge, I recommend the Bison Meatloaf, but in the Inn, I highly recommend the Buffet.

We did see the Eclipse. We went as far south as Ashton, and we got to see it from first contact to last contact, with a full 2 minutes of Totality. What a show.

We actually went one evening to see the Rodeo in Cody, WY. Its basically a choreographed show. Entertaining, yes, but IMHO not a real Rodeo. Plus its on from 8 PM to 10 PM and its a 3 hour drive each way. We were camped at Headwaters/Flagg Ranch.

There is way too much to report here, but I would be glad to answer questions.
  • Well, we did see Yogi Bear eating next to the pavement on the left side. Boo Boo was not in sight, and we didn't see Ranger Smith, either.

Animals sighted: Plenty of bison (one walking on the center of the road), a near collision with two elk at 12:13 AM, red fox, Bald Eagle, squirrels, Osprey, lizards.
  • Jellystone is what got me interested in Yellowstone! Loved the cartoons as a kid! Love the NP as an adult!
  • Jellystone National Park is where Yogi Bear and Boo Boo Bear (his sidekick) got into cartoon misadventures when we were kids.

I guess I knew about Jellystone long before I knew about Yellowstone.....

I would bet Jellystone was tongue in cheek and he is talking about Yellowstone NP due to the locations he referenced - Norris Junction, Geyser Basin, etc.

  • We only ran into traffic in the middle road, the one that connectst the loops. We got lucky in that we pulled up just as the traffic was switched to the direction we were going. So no real wait. We were there the last week of July.
