We have done both of those trips. Both trips are worthwhile but quite different. The northwest trip once you get past Chicago will be open spaces and far less traffic on the roads. I would include Devil's Tower on that trip as well. There is a lot to see and do in Yellowstone and since you are hikers you could spend days there. We spent 4 days there this summer without the hiking nor did we walk all of the geyser basins.
On the northeast trip you would have more traffic and but again well worth it. I am not sure I would put NYC in with the rest of the trip. On the way to Maine you might want to stop at Gloucester (whale watch) and Rockport in Mass. The drive along the coast of Maine is nice and yoou can spend days in Acadia NP.
In New Brunswick, St John is a nice place to stop as is Fundy National Park. You can stop and see the extreme tides at the Hopewell Flower Pots.
In Nova Scotia there are driving routes along the coasts, the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island, and the Fortress of Louisbourg. A boat ride to the puffins can be fun.
As I said they are two different kinds of trips.
I have a blog of the Maine/Nova Scotia trip if you would like to look at what types of things there are to do. Acadia and the Canadian Maritimes
