We did both of the trips you are considering when our sons were growing up. They loved the ferry ride from Staten Island to Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, having Thanksgiving dinner in a 1732 inn on the Connecticut coast, and, especially, touring Old Ironsides in Boston Harbor. They also spent days in the Smithsonian in DC, particularly in the Air & Space Museum.
But they also loved the geysers, hot springs, mud pots, and wildlife in Yellowstone, the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, and canoeing on Jackson Lake. One unique experience was when we got up very early one morning, just as you do, to get to Yellowstone Falls before the crowds arrived. We were the first car in the parking lot and saw half a dozen buffalo/bison grazing on the tall grass in the landscape strips between parking rows. We sat very quietly in the car and watched them slowly walk right past us. We waited until they were out of sight before we ventured to the falls, which were spectacular, but anticlimactic at that point! Interestingly, however, the part of that trip they still talk most about (they are now 43 and 40) is staying in a real log cabin at Coulter Bay on Jackson Lake, building a roaring fire in the stone fireplace, and lying in bed watching the flames.
BTW, you'll love retirement. Imagine spending 3 months touring western Canada and Alaska--Denali NP, Kenai Fjords NP, Wrangell-St. Elias NP, Banff NP, Jasper NP, and many, many more!
