We definitely want another trip this coming summer. It was a huge favor that my wife asked of her job last summer. We're scared to ask again so soon, but probably will. We're debating of doing a more northwest loop including Rushmore, Badlands, Tetons, Yellowstone and maybe as far as Glacier. Or, a northeastern loop, NYC, coast up through Maine, maybe Nova Scotia? No doubt from me that I would go northwest...my wife wants the other loop.

Both are great ideas and we are doing both in the next 2 years! We're not going that far north though.
This summer we are doing NYC, Philly (Liberty bell, Independence Hall, Battleship New Jersey), Baltimore (Fort McHenry, USS Constellation), DC, Wildwood NJ, Assateague Island (I actually got a site at the state park, woo-hoo!). Maybe hit Gettysburg on the way home.
2016 We will do Craters of the moon nm, Yellowstone, and South Dakota.
We did the nature route this year in the Smokies so we thought it was time for a city and history run this coming summer. Then back to nature and Yellowstone after that.
Maybe go east since you just went west? Either way you can't mess up, it will be good. I Hope your wife gets the time off.
