Two things about Northeast - history (Plymouth, Boston, Washington DC, and if you can sneak it in Gettysburg and Philadephia), and the wife wants to go (lol).
Think about checking out the Mayflower and Plymouth Plantation before your kids get too old. Then there's the Liberty Bell, Washington DC, history tour of Boston, etc etc.
When you get all the way up to Maine, Acadia National Park is a must stop.
For "extreme" tourist trap, have you been to Disney World? Staying at the Fort Wilderness Campground is the ONLY way to experience Disney.
Pretty much anywhere you go in the USA is great, and your kids will always remember the trips!
