Black Canyon of the Gunnison
We were on route from Ridgway to RMNP, and Black Canyon is right on the way. We had originally planned a night or two here, but glad we changed that to a stopover. In all, we spent about 4 hours at this park. Plenty.
We drove the upper loop, getting out at the overlooks. It isn't the easiest park with a TT.
The boys worked on their badges.
Instead of going down into the canyon, with a tip from the ranger, we drove about 15 miles east on 50 and there is another little park that lets you in to the bottom of the canyon. It isn't officially BCG, but it is the same canyon. We were headed east either way.
There was a cool looking, easy trail that followed the river, but at this point, we were picking and choosing where to spend our energy. So we stood by the dam, took a photo, ate lunch and hit the road!
I'm sure Black Canyon is worthy of a longer investment, but I think there are two ways to see it...Either look a say WOW or do lots of hard hiking. We said WOW!
