I hear you - I too am a drive by visitor to AVS in recent years since we sold the old house with the *ahem* "home theater" (to use the term loosely). Life is full of seasons, and with our family on the cusp of empty nesthood, my focus has begun to shift from building HTs and carpooling kids to thinking for the next season for my bride and myself as we transition gradually into retirement years. Since I own my own business that can be operated, to a degree, from a distance, I'm scheming and exploring about a more nomadic phase, at least during the cold winter months.
At the same time I'm not sure I could sit still long enough to just stay put in one place for the entire winter, every winter, but the idea of exploring interesting (and warm!) places - like the spots you guys hit in the southwest - is increasingly appealing to me. Right now I'm thinking just a smaller overland vehicle that could handle the back roads, just big enough for the Mrs and me. Maybe something like this.

Of course, the missus is still blissfully oblivious to my plans at this point, but she rolled with the punches pretty well when I suddenly started the long basement project which included the HT. Hopefully she'll keep rolling with me!
I camped quite a bit as a lad, but I'm ashamed to admit we didn't do much camping during the kids' growing up phase - time just somehow seems to get away from you when you're trying to survive from crisis to crisis - until one day you wake up and realize they kids they were are gone forever. So kudos to you for carping the proverbial diem and making that family adventure happen this past summer, when they're young enough to embrace it. Those memories will stay with them - and you - forever. Bravo!
Fun to see your lads so grown up. They seem like great kids. Can't imagine how they managed to develop so well given their crazy paternal unit. Must have an exceptional mother!
Maybe we'll see you on the road someday, somewhere. Happy trails!
