I understand what you're saying. Even though I didn't have as epic of a trip as your family just did, I know exactly what you're taking about.
For me, I don't think it has as much to do with technology as a distraction but more that other people have ZERO interest in our family vacations. They don't value travel like my family does and therfore, they can't appreciate it. Whenever I bring up the topic, their eyes glaze over, they avoid eye contact, and nobody asks a single question. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out they don't want to hear about it.
I've accepted it somewhat, or at least I know who to choose as an audience.
Your family doesn't mean to be hurtful, they just don't understand how important it is to you and frankly they can't understand. They don't share your passion. I know it's hard but try not to take it personally.
Last summer I invited my niece to vacation with us. Very rare chance for her. We had an extra seat in the car and the stars aligned to let her come along. It was to a place where she's never been and her family will never go. A huge opportunity for her, or so I thought. You know that her mother said no because she had one hour of volleyball practice on one of the four days she'd be with us! !!!! She's 9 and it was a church league, it's not like it was high school or even a travel league; but a free church team. I just didn't understand why she wouldn't want her daughter to have this amazing experience. She was aware that I can't offer again and she won't go. Why wouldn't you want your children to see and experience everything they possibly can? !? I finally figured she said no because she doesn't value travel like we do. She didn't see it as a benefit for her daughter to have this experience.
It's sad but true that not everyone enjoys or values travel. They can't understand the desire and therfore the rewards.
Sorry you're disappointed. I would be too.
