One lesson I've learned from such experiences is that our greatest journeys are not be measured by places on a map or photos that can be shared, but by how we have been changed by the journey. Or as John Steinbeck said more eloquently, "People don't take trips; trips take people."
The loss is your family members' loss. The gain is your yours and your boys. That may not be as much as you might wish, but fortunately it is more than enough for your sons.
