Trouble on the border

We have Big Bend, Texas on our list of things to see and do this year and we are wondering how safe it is with all the problems with the border crossings? Anyone have Big Bend on their list this year?
  • If you are scared, you will not have a good time. True anywhere for anyone.

But, before thinking that Big Bend is on the "fast immigrant road north into the U.S.", look at the map, particularly of the area south of Big Bend.

Been many years since I have driven that area of Mexico (old VW bus), but there were ZERO paved roads for many, many miles going south from Big Bend. For example, the route we drove, from Piedras Negras/Eagle Pass) to Boquillas del Carmen/Big Bend is 242 miles. I just pulled up Google Map and today it shows a 6 hour 49 minute drive. So even today an average speed of 34 mph including the paved section out of Piedras Negras. I recall one mountain pass over a mile high on a narrow dirt road. Again, NOT a traveled/paved route.

That area of Mexico is even more rugged than Big Bend.

Given the current immigration and political issues going on right now I personally would not risk taking my family or my RV rig to that area. Or, wait for a year to plan your trip when the govt. has a chance to decide how they are going to deal with the immigration issues.

I've never heard of a single incident where anything like this happened. I've camped near the border for 18 years and never had any trouble. But if you're worried about it then don't go.
  • This mornings FOX 13 news said "Tens of thousands" are coming across the opened borders. They are not ALL good people looking for a better life. I'm concerned that a 40' diesel pusher could be inviting to one having motives in being driven somewhere comfortably instead of walking...
  • I'm sure in a couple pages this thread will become heated. I'll watch.

I'm not sure what 'all the problems' are.

That is a very remote area never any problems there - we will be there early next year
  • You won't have any trouble. Those that come illegally want to get in and disappear as soon as possible and not hang around in the area.
