TRYING to book State Park in the Florida Keys

Just got back to Indiana and it is already time to start planning next Christmas vacation.
Watching sites disappear every morning on Reserve America.
Anyone else frustrated with how fast all the sites are reserved each day?
Seems impossible to get a site, but we'll keep trying!

  • We book our sites for Topsail Hill SP exactly at 12:01 AM 11 months in advance every year. It's the only way to get what we want. Have never been denied.
  • Private CG in the Keys are very expensive. The State parks, especially Bahia Honda are very nice. Camping in the Keys is very popular. So mix all that together and you get what you are seeing, it is very difficult to grab a SP site and has been for as long as I can recall. Last time I got to camp at Bahia Honda was when we were heading down expecting to to get a private CG site. This was in the off-season. As we came up to BH I just pulled in on a whim and asked if they had any cancellations and Lo! they did. Not something I would plan on getting however.

It would be better maybe if they went to a Yosemite type lottery system.

  • You book a site for whatever date you get then plan your trip around those dates.

Florida State Parks charge about a third to a fourth of what commercial parks charge in the area, have three times as many employees with full benefits and are on pieces of properties that a commercial venture couldn't afford.

Sometimes I think as a Florida tax payer, they should charge full market value.

At least I could get in occasionally.
  • We are planning a trip in April 2014. I have been told, we will be lucky to get a site. We are going to try. Good luck.
