Check what the RV Park is like on Google Maps Desert Trails RV Park, South San Joaquin Road, Tucson, AZ. It seems to have was of driving out of the park into the desert & trails there without getting onto the highway. It seems to live up to its name.
As for shopping, I didn't look very carefully, more than likely not. It is located on the extreme western edge of Tucson proper.
