Upper Peninsula

Plan to visit friends in Midland, Mi then head to Upper Peninsula. Did a search and found suggestions to visit Pictured Rock, Taquamenon Falls, Edmund Fitzgerald Museum, Artist Point, Porcupine Mountains and Fort Wilkins fort. Are there any other sites we should include? We want to site see, not fish or do any strenous hikes. Will we have trouble finding cg to stay at if we go in a few weeks since we don't have any reservations? We are ok with state parks or private parks. Need electric hook ups at least. We are interested in any site seeing above the Soo Locks. We have already been to Mackinaw area. Thanks for any information you can provide.
  • Again the UP is a big place!! I like the Porkupine Mountains, lake of the clouds, Ft wilkens, at the western end of the UP, The soo locks and whitefish point at the east end. Grand Maris and the pictured rocks in the middle. You should stop at Mackinaw island on the way there. Take a couple of weeks!!
  • The Soo Locks - Sault Ste. Marie
    Mackinaw Island for sure.

And no the UP is not that big. Only a few hours end to end. Plan an itinerary and have fun....

We did pretty much what you are planning 2 summers ago... had no issues finding CG's
  • There are some nice state forest c.g.'s in the U.P. Be sure to take insect repellent during the summer months as the bugs can be bad.
Also recommend a visit to the Shipwreck Museum - climb up the lighthouse if you are able.

  • If you happen to belong to the Elks..they have a nice c/g on the lake at Sault Saint Marie...also look for the rest the Antlers near the locks...fun place really...Chuck
  • Isle Royale National Park is worth a visit. Can't rv camp there but it's an outstanding place.

Double ditto re Bond Falls near Paulding.
  • You do realize that the U.P. is "big" How much driving do you want to do?

Grand Marais is a good representive for da U.P. The Soo (Sault St. Marie) is a great place to see the ships through the locks. Enjoy. Us Trolls (we live below the bridge) have a good time visitng the real Up North.
