Seven days at Kodachrome seems like a lot.
Are you planning other stops between RMNP and Mesa Verde? You'll be passing right through some amazing territory right at the peak of the aspens changing. One can spend a lot of time in the Durango area near Mesa Verde. Also, how about Black Canyon of the Gunnison?
If you stay somewhere in the Escalante area, you could spend days exploring the NM there. Calf Creek Falls, Hwy 12, etc.
