Utah's State Highway 12

For whatever reason, Margie and I have never been on highway 12 in central Utah. I'm not concerned that it may be narrow, steep, winding, and slow, but we are traveling and I'd like to maximize my sightseeing time instead of campsite searching.

What I'm seeking are your boondocking recommendations along the route from Panguitch to Torrey.

BTW - BLM has a pretty good information site with their recommendations...

  • Well I don't know about Highway 12 in Utah - we'd like to travel it eventually - but a couple of hours ago we just went through the old part of Newport, OR in our widebody Class C on Memorial Day ... and if one can weave an RV through there with vehicles every whichway, then Highway 12's lane widths should be a piece of cake.

P.S. The lanes in Cades Cove are pretty much horse and buggy width for an RV, too.
  • I just returned from that area. This was my 6th visit and one of my favorite areas to explore. The entire route passes through and is surrounded by both the Dixie National Forest and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The boondocking opportunities in both "areas" is unlimited.
  • Highway 12 is a great road through some amazing areas. The road however only gives a glimpse as to what is out there. While the views are great from the road, do yourselves a favor and find a spot to stay a few days and drop into the canyons and really explore. If you are in a position physically to put a few miles under your feet you can find some of the most amazing places in my opinion. Whatever you do, have fun!
