Utah's State Highway 12

For whatever reason, Margie and I have never been on highway 12 in central Utah. I'm not concerned that it may be narrow, steep, winding, and slow, but we are traveling and I'd like to maximize my sightseeing time instead of campsite searching.

What I'm seeking are your boondocking recommendations along the route from Panguitch to Torrey.

BTW - BLM has a pretty good information site with their recommendations...

  • Escalante area, if it's hot go up on Boulder mountain, if it's on the cool side head down the Burr Trail. Lot's of great camping in that area, one of our favorite area's. You can take the road out of Escalante that goes over Boulder Mt. and comes out in Loa just west of Torrey, many camping spots, might try Posey Lake if you want a CG. Campground in Torrey is great place to dump and get a good shower if you've been boondocking up on Boulder Mountain, which has a lot of Aspen to camp in.

Subscribing, 'cause I plan to take hwy 12 later this summer :).
  • I just spent 2 months up in that area, this spring. It is spectacular and so many places to boondock to count. The only limitation is the rig you bring with you. The road is narrow and steep in someplaces like around MP 27, but most will do very well. Enjoy and stay off the back roads when it is rainy, or stay put until it is dry enough to get moving.

  • It's winding, steep, narrow and slow. With scenery like this, you don't want to rush!
  • Just East of Red Canyon (before you get to Bryce), there are several nice boondocking opportunities.
    Escalante is almost all boondocking.
Some nice spots just East of Boulder on the Burr Trail.
Up in the forest, N. of Boulder, are many sites.
