Watkins Glen, NY which campground to choose for next summer

I have narrowed it down for next summer to either Clute Park Campground or Watkins Glen State Park.

I have read through some of the reviews on both campgrounds,

Clute park campground, has full hookups and no mention of noise at night and bathrooms/showers seem to be well kept. price is more and campground looks like it might not be as scenic.

Watkins Glen State Park, more scenic, less cost, electric only, But on some reviews I have read of parting going on at night, unmaintained sites and bathrooms/showers were not clean.

For now I'm leaning toward Watkins Glen State Park, but I am concerned about possible late night noise issues and maybe the bathrooms/showers not being clean.

How has everyone's experiences been at either campground?

(I have ruled out Watkins Glen/Corning KOA)

Thank you for your replies,
Mike

I spent a month at Clute a couple years ago. It's a glorified parking lot but, if I had any plans to go to NY again, I'd go back just for the location. There is a lakefront park across the street. It's right on the Finger Lakes Trail. It's an easy walk into town.

We stayed at Clute for a week this September - great location you can walk to Walmart. I will stay there again - we enjoyed the full hook ups and cable

The KOA was about 5 miles out of town and looked nice but it was gated and I could not drive into the park
  • If you hit the Glen when there's a race, I'll bet the SP is rowdy. Clute is ok, but the transient area is a little tight. The lake is right across the street and there's a nice park to sit in. Walmart is in walking distance.

Not sure why you ruled out the KOA, but the spots in the back are quiet and well appointed.

Here's the thread I posted after staying in Clute this summer.
  • We had no issues at Watkins Glen SP but that was a few years ago.
Did the poster go on a race weekend?
  • I stayed at Watkins Glen State Park - loved it, not sure where you heard about noise/partying/showers but its a state park and my experience is that the rangers do not tolerate unruly behaviour.

We had no issues with the bathrooms

    gerry
