Watkins Glen State Park NY

Looking at booking a few nights at Watkins Glen State Park in NY. this summer Based on the reservation website they don't have any site that could accommodate anything over 30'. We're in the process of buying a 35' class A and wanted to know if anyone has camped there with a unit larger than a 30', do you remember which loop/site you stayed in?

Thanks in advance
  • I know they have sites that will handle any sized motorhome, because I had such a site when I was there. The site I had was large enough to not only handle the motorhome, but you would not even have need to unhook the toad. I'll look and see if I can give you specifics

I just looked and we were in Mohawk village loop. I am not certain, but It looks like it was site #81 that I was on, and it was huge.
  • If you aren't happy with the SP, Clute Park is about a half mile away and the KOA is up the hill about 3 miles. The sites in the back of the KOA are huge.
  • Went to that CG a few years ago. Don't remember which loop except that it sort of overlooked the town way below. Lots of sites for med sized rigs.
  • Your rig is too long. I recently drove through the park looking for a place for my 34" fifth wheel - not one site tht I could easily pull into. I had a 34' motor home and found only one site I could put it on.

Most of the loops in Watkins Glen have allot of trees and it will be hard to park the unit - only a few sites on Tuscarora Village will work.

Try staying at Sampson State Park or Keuka Lake State park - I can give you site number (that is where we stay and drive over to Watkins Glen). Both of the parks are great and not that long of a drive to Watkins Glen. Your camping pass is good for any state park. If you want to walk the gorge - use the camping pass from another park and park in the large lot by the swimming pool area and gain access to the gorge from there.

x2 on Clute - plenty of large sites , lake and more park area is across the street and you can walk to restaurants/stores/etc.
  • Whether you stay in the Park or not, make sure you hike the Gorge. Hint: catch the shuttle at the visitors center and let them ride you up to the top. Easy hike down

  • Those super sites in the back of the koa are some of the nicer sites we have seen.

Stamped concrete, sunken fire pit. Built in, composite furniture, lights etc....
  • Stay at Sampson state park and drive to Watkins Glen if you can. I have never stayed at Clute or the KOA personally. We like Keuka Lake s.p. as well, but there aren't as many sites with power if that is your thing. Plenty of non hookup sites that will accommodate you though.
  • I second the stay at Sampson idea. Watkins is a nice park, but it is old and small. The Finger Lakes are is not so big that you can't enjoy Watkins from Sampson. Watkins is about a 20 minute easy drive South of Sampson along the wine trail on 414.

After reading this post I had to check Google Earth to see if we are both talking about the same Watkins Glen SP CG.

We are. Sorry, but at 55'LOA there were more than a few sites plenty big enough for our <36' 5er. We were right on the S rim of the canyon. Were it not for the trees we would have had a clear view of the town & lake from our site. Must be one heck of a view in the fall when some of the leaves have gone.

If you need clear space for that must have dish TV then this SP is not for you. Better off with the wide open KOA, & private CG price to go with it.
