It is absolutely amazing that the best state park swimming hole in the entire state of Texas is way out west - at Balmorhea.
Even the best place for scuba diving training.
Summer time - reservations are essential.
If you can't get in - Saddleback is ok. If you want more than a day - Davis Mountains SP is about 35 miles south and a good place to stop. At 5,000 ft elevation - it's not near as hot as places like Fort Stockton where you can fry eggs on your TV hood at 7 am.
I never knew there were that many people in West Texas. The park does implement a crowd control measure - where cars have to line up outside. When one car leaves, another is allowed in.
