I will have to second the Red Rock Canyon State Park, in California.
Since I also have a JEEP, a lot to explore, this area is Ideal.
I can just go across the road, drop into 4WD, and explore the old mines, ghost towns, and do some rock hounding. My Wife and I also have horses, so this area, ( although the park won't allow them) is perfect for riding. We must just keep the horses out of the campground proper, so we camp up in or near Randsburg.
