We will be spending 3-4 nights in the Mount Rushmore area. Where would be a good local place that would be in the middle of all to see in that place/area??

We normally stay near Custer.Crazy Horse campground on US 395 Fort Welikit on SD 89Time will not be in your favor 2.5 -3 weeks will be pushing it. (info from other post)

Our favorite in that area is Rafter J Bar Ranch CG in Hill City. The Ranch Camp & Island areas are the best.

Hi,Along Highway 16, just east of Mt Rushmore is 4 tunnels, each cut perfectly into the mountain to look directly at Mt. Rushmore! Stop at the 2nd or third one, and get pictures. The first and fourth are always really crowded by people who do not know about the other 4 tunnels, and stopped at the first one.Also as you leave the Mt Rushmore parking area, you can turn right and go about 1/4 mile to a tiny parking area, and get a side shot of Washington!I also stayed at Custer State park, even though it is not 'really' close, but I had a car to get back and forth, and it avoided driving the motorhome on as many tiny two lane roads. I ended up taking highway 16 several times in the fog to see the monument before a third trip to see it in daylight and see the monument through the tunnels! Have fun!Fred.

It is good to here Big Pine is nice. We will be staying their this coming July. I picked Big Pine because of reviews on clean bathrooms and nice owners.

We were there in the offseason. The KOA is the closest, but they wanted $35 for DRY CAMPING. HUH? Needless to say we didn't stay there and won't.

This is an absoult jewel. we stayed here several years ago used to be on Passport America, don't know if it still is?
But great spot out of the way. a few miles souther of town and we'll go back another day.

hello everyone,
I'd like to awaken those new to this type of question is that the most reviewed ,suggested camps are because they are the largest, thus get more visitors, thus more responders.
I've even seen posters here and on rvparkreviews.com slam their fav in effort to make it less busy.
There' s many a hidden jewel smaller camp about.

I'm pretty certain it was Korczak Kiolkowski who sculpted and carved Crazy Horse. His wife and children took over the project when he died. I agree that a visit to the monument is a must see along with Rushmore.
