I'm almost 59 and remember as a kid Mom and Dad camping with no electricity, water, and only a pit toilet. We swam in the nearby river for bathing, and water for the entire campground was supplied by a hand pump. It was a "BIG" event when the owner put a paid coke machine beside his garage at the park entrance!
Today, it's quite different. I think many of us have a need to be connected to the world, even when we try to get away from it. So cell phones, internet access, television are items just as important these days as an ample supply of fishing worms was when we were kids!
Even when getting away, we still have constant communication with aging parents, our jobs, and our kids. We're still concerned about the weather at home, local news, and what's going on in the world. Our jobs require us to be accessible 24x7, and that drives a lot of the "need" to stay connected with "civilization."
I was able to finally convince my wife to remove her Blue-Tooth from her ear when we take the canoe out! I teased her so much about this, she never did it again!
