What Shutdown? Saluting New Mexico Army Corps of Engineers.

I want to send a shout out to the district office here for finding a way to keep this campground open during the Washington Shutdown Follies.

We had reservations for a week at the Abiquiu, NM Riana Lake COE park, arriving two days ago. Called, told we could come on in for at least two nights until today. We've really enjoyed this park on the beautiful lake in Georgia O'Keeffe country, and took tours yesterday of the artist's home and Ghost Ranch. The Cerro Pedernal mountain she painted (where her ashes were scattered) rises over the campground.

The latest is - this campground is going to stay open until October 12. We decided not to take a chance so already booked to leave this morning for Santa Fe. But I salute those who decided what their budget could manage and acted independently. Way to go, COE!
  • Don't celebrate too loudly or to soon. Lots of USACE campgrounds stayed open for the first few days, but are now starting to close.

Fortunately, no longer will be an issue for us. But we sure were glad to get those two nights after the government had "closed."
  • We have reservations starting Sunday night for 4 nights at a COE campground outside of Santa Fe, NM. The park personnel has called twice over the last 3 days to assure us that the park is open and looking forward to seeing us. When I asked the women who called how they are staying open, she replied that the COE has money in their coffers so they are open.

Contrast this with the fact that the national forest service locked all of the pit toilet facilities at trail heads outside of Sedona. I guess they are worried someone will fall in!

We have reservations at Rudds Creek CG on Kerr reservoir in VA. When I called Thursday, the lady told me that they had found money for the Rangers till Oct 11th, which is of course our arrival date, she said to call back Monday, which I will.
  • We are working at Cape Cod Canal, Ma with COE. We're told we'd have to leave when gov shuts down, but next day, they 'found' funds. Hopefully enough to last til closing day of Oct 14.
    Will be back next year.

well, we had reservations at a COE park in NM and they told us they'd be closing, so we made other arrangements. we called the park itself to say we wouldnt be there, but they then said they would be open, But we'd already made alternate plans, so they charged us $30 for a "late" cancelation.

    gee, thanks.
  • They may be able to borrow some funds from the congressional gym. Congressmen pay a small monthly fee but the government subsidy pays most of the cost of this plush facility. They seem to have found plenty of money to stay open.
