If you get thru the Midland/Odessa area, there is a wing of the Conferderate Airforce Museum. They're moving it to Dallas, so if this is something you're interested in, I would suggest calling to make sure they are still operating. When I was there a few years back, it probably took me 6 hours to get thru it because there is ALOT of history and they had the biggest collection of bomber nose art.
Camping in the area might be kinda tough. The oilfields in that area have experienced a significant boom over the last 4-5 years and there are experiencing a tight motel/campground situation.
Several landowners have created man camps where the oilfield workers just park their trailers in converted "campgrounds" and are making a fortune.
