What to do between San Antonio and Carlsbad Caverns

I'm currently looking at options for routes from So Cal to the Gulf Shores and beyond. I remembered this thread. Liked the sound of avoiding the drive between Ft. Stockton & Junction. But I also take it at a much more leisurely pace. I'm looking at spending a few days in Alpine, then Del Rio. Both appear to have good parks.
