Hello holstein13...Are you planning to go beyond Carlsbad? Posters are starting to give information beyond Carlsbad.
If I may be seen bold . . . I'm doing the reverse. Leaving So Cal, heading east. Here's the route I will likely be taking, but I've reversed it to your direction of travel. 90 out of San Antonio (please see my previous post) to Anthony, New Mexico. We'll spend a few days in Benson, visiting those caverns, etc. Great desert RV park in Tonopah. Going into LA can mean a lot of different places, but you will want to time your arrival around commuter traffic. And, if possible, use the 210. I'd suggest you spend at least one night at Pechanga RV Resort in Temecula (Passport America midweek). Then head into LA from there. rvparkreviews.com will offer good park choices.
