People have boondocked from the beginning of RVs and the beginning of cars. It is a very American experience to go on a road trip and see where you end up.
The Nat Park Service has done a very poor job of updating their campgrounds to accommodate RVs. The Forest Service and BLM have done only a fair job. Most larger RVs say TT over 26 feet do not fit. Neither do larger MH.
This may differ depending on the state. In Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming we have found that we can find FS CG's and BLM CG's that will fit larger RVs.
As camp hosts for the BLM in Idaho at Blackfoot Res it has been updated with long back in sites and has several big rig friendly long pull throughs all with 50 amp $10 ($5 golden pass) plus $5 electric 16 sites. 14 dry w several any size sites at $5 ($2.50
w/golden pass). Better than boondocking high on a hill with great views. All about it and pictures with map
Yes there are some gems out there and it is very low usage. Mostly local use as not well known.
