Safety is a relative thing. You have to maintain your situational awareness and trust your gut and experience. In 50 years of camping on the road I have ended up in some unusual places. I have felt really threatened maybe 3 times.
You can lock up an RV. I travel with 3 dogs as my first line of defense. When I was younger I did not carry firearms, but now I do. Anyone that does anything stupid will not like the end result. I feel safe at home and I feel safe on the road. Remoteness is almost always your best friend.
