I would not agree on skipping the south rim. Yes, I personally like the north rim better because it is cool and green and very quiet -- great boondocking. But on the south rim, you are usually looking at the canyon with the sun behind you instead of in front, so that visibility is better. The tourist facilities on the south rim are much better. There are more paved trails for walking along the rim.
And there are some genuine Grand Canyon experts (hi, Lauren!) who favor the south rim, so that is not advice that should be lightly disregarded.
