Where to boondock in or near Death Valley

Yes, I did do a search and read the other threads, but most were old and I would like to know if anyone has anything new.

I'm heading to Death Valley in a few days (mid December) and am wondering about boondocking there. The park rules say you have to be one mile from a paved road and not next to any day-use only roads. I have a good 4X4 and will tent camp, and my friend has a p/u with a light-weight camper.

Any thoughts for someone who's never been there? I camp and four-wheel a lot, so am not a rookie, but I have never been to DV and would like to hear any advice/ithoughts you all have. Thanks in advance.

Also - anyone know if the rattlers are still out? Tarantulas? :)

    2015 is too old?
  • I haven't heen there for years but I was a desert rat in CA for 40 years. I would just get off the road any place outside the Park and camp. It is aok desert. However, I would pack up camp each day and do my sight seeing.
