Where to go in April

We are completely new to RV'ing but very interested in trying it out. We are planning on renting a class C for 10 days in mid-late April next year but are not sure where to go. We would love to find a really beautiful location with incredible scenery and reasonably good weather. We are open to going anywhere in the USA. We are not looking at strenuous hiking, but lovely walking paths would be great.

Being on a lake would be an extremely good thing!

We are NOT looking for an overcrowded RV park, but don't want to get too terribly far from civilization/communication since we will be in a rented RV with unknown maintenance history.

Would love to have some places to research from people who have been there.

Thanks!!

  • "Go West Young Man, Go West". Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, or Black Hills of South Dakota. All are beautiful. May would be better to avoid the heavy snow. With that being said, you can still get into some snow in May. We were in Yellowstone late last may and could not see the mountain tops due to snow falling, but the roads were mostly passable.
  • If you're considering the Colorado Rockies area (geography, not baseball ;) ), definitely look to later in spring. April is not a good time to be here for camping purposes. April is among the snowiest months in Colorado, and snow in May, though not common, is not out of the question. Most campgrounds don't open until May, and in the high country, it's mud season...that transition from lots of snow to not so much, in April and May and even into June. Many places don't fully open until Memorial Day, such as Trail Ridge Rd in RMNP, Mt Evans Rd, and some of the seasonal high passes. If you can wait until Memorial Day passes, the wait is worth it.

Also, since you've posted your message in this particular forum topic, I'm presuming that amenities are not a high priority, but scenery is. The need for FHU are less than the need for a quality experience, yes? If that's the case, then definitely waiting would yield a vast opportunity in such places as Taylor Park and the Arkansas River Valley and Collegiate Range, the mountainous southwest part of Colorado around Durango/Cortez/Ouray/Silverton/Pagosa Springs, the mountain areas around RMNP including Poudre Canyon, Red Feather Lakes, Grand Lake/Granby/Estes Park, the resort areas of the central mountains...there's much to see and do in Colorado!
  • I will certainly check out the reports. Thanks for steering me in that direction.

I have lived in the Caribbean before so that's not something that we want to see in the RV. But thanks for the ideas please keep them coming!

Check out the Trip Reports at the top of the Truck Camper forum.
  • For great and varied scenery, I would chose Yellowstone. April is very iffy because of snow/cold, but May into June should be very good.
Yellowstone has it all: lakes, snow covered mountains, thermal wonders, wild animals, etc.
  • If you can go in April, why not go where few folks go, and those that do wish they could go again... Death Valley National Park. Hikes available in desert canyons, mountains, and you will likely see snow in the high mountains surrounding the valley! Sorry, no lakes but the average April temp range 61 to 89.
  • Our schedule is flexible too. We would like to do it in either April or May. Perhaps early June
  • Yes, we definitely plan on flying wherever we go. One thing we are not short on is FF miles on pretty much almost every airline.
  • Do you plan on flying in and renting the Class C on arrival? If not, 10 days limits your range to east of the Mississippi. Also April is early for many places out west since in many parks the roads may not open until mid to late June and sometimes later.
