Where to go in mid April 2019

go up 395 through lone pine and bishop, etc. all the way up to highway 50. IF the road is clear and you like mountain driving, take 50 west across the Sierras and go down to Placerville and take 49 south down through the gold mining towns, to Mariposa and on down to Oakhurst and then on down southwest to Fresno.
It's a great route if you have time and the roads are clear.

Death Valley has great places to see in the cooler months. Lots of mine building and mills to explore in the surrounding mountains along with the sliding stones out in the playa.

We could give you some suggestions with more information i.e. mountains, desert, ocean etc etc

Perhaps Joshua Tree if it is not closed due to the you know what.
