Having worked at Custer for two summers, let me suggest that nice as Legion Lake is (as far as location to food and swimming goes) the CG is in a narrow notch between two hills. On summer days with little or no breeze it gets hot in that little notch. No breeze gets into the notch.
Stockade South and Stockade North are set up on a hill and most sites in both locations are mostly shade. The lower loop at has a water source in the middle that can be reached with a longer hose from many of the sites in that loop. South has a water source on the upper end behind the shower house.
Center Lake is just passable IMO but many of the locals like it.
Sylvan Lake CG has the highest elevation in the park, but the sites are small (nothing for big rigs) and close together.
Game Lodge is probably the most popular. Level sites and reasonable in size and there is a chance you will have buffy grazing on the lawn just over the fence. Lot of wild life visit there.
Blue Bell is probably the prettiest (again IMO) Set in pines with a lodge across the street and horse livery adjoining the CG. Some larger sites for big rigs. Nice stream around one edge of the CG.
Grace Coolidge is on the main highway thru the park. Nice little stream surrounding the backside of the CG and a fishing area (pond and stream) across the street Level sites, some in the open but mostly shade.
Horse Camp. Big sites, open and shade. Restricted to those camping with horses. Beautiful stream running through the CG.
There are numerous privately owned CGs around the CSP and Custer city with full hookups, but generally more expensive.
