I am a planner / reservations guy; others wing it from day to day.
We are going to OR Coast - God willing - again and lots of places in between come 2014. I have already booked most of the OR places and many for the coming and going from Tucson area.
Why? Because I know I will have a spot at high visibility places and perhaps busy times; particularly on weekends. And I get a specific or at least category of spot I want. I have heard too many horror stories - and have had some bad experiences early on. And we do not need / want high amenity places - we are out hiking, backroad driving or something most of the time.
March to June is not real high demand time so, for most places it would probably not be a major issue. Depends on your needs as well.
