Seriously? 260 miles is too ambitious in a car? From our home to our hometown, where our parents live is a 200 mile stretch. We often drive there and back in the same day. And it's usually just me driving. Heck I drive 35 miles just to get to work every day.
How do truck drivers do it? And I imagine its a little tougher driving a truck pulling a 53' trailer. Long haul truck drivers can drive 11 hours in a 14 hour period and then needs to take 10 hours off. So for simpler example, lets say 11 hours, every 24 hrs. Not technically correct, but that's the most they can drive in a day if they drive straight through. At a low average of 55mph, thats over 600 miles in a day.
Ah, but you forgot about two boys, 6 and 9 years old. Kids like to see something besides the car windows. Three weeks doing mostly driving wouldn't be kind to them. Get as far as Yellowstone and Grand Tetons, spend a couple of weeks, and they'd have the time of their lives. I know I did at that age!
Y'all are making it out like he's gonna be driving everyday. 3 days to ge to Yellowstone and then 2 days from there to California. That's driving simply 8 hrs a day. On the road at 8am and parked by 5 or 6 pm. Plenty of time to rest up before the next day. And they will get to see mor of the countryside than they may ever get to experience before. 10 days of driving total leaves about 11 days to see both places. I would imagine that a week in either one will make them wanting to see something else.
I'm just saying its doable. Will it be more relaxing to just go to Yellowstone and back home in 3 weeks? Sure it would be. But, once again, it's up to them to make their own decision. There are different factors why someone may need or want to do a destination trip. Time and money are two big ones. He may have the time and money to do it this year, but may not the next.
