Why to Organ Pipe Cactus

Folks:

Wife and I would like suggestions on boondocking/dry camping in the Why to Organ Pipe Monument area for about 5 days.

Have 30' fiver/Duramax.

Any help would be truly appreciated.

NPS brings out the dangers of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in the heart of the Sonoran Desert.

Please be aware of the dangers and your surroundings... Being so close to the Border brings on all of the illegal crossings and associated problems...

Have never camped there but have visited the area a few times back in my early Arizona days. It is gorgeous country down there... Also on the HOT side haha..

You are kinda on your own when you get away from the Monument Camp area... Be prepared survival wise...

  • OP, do a search on "Darby Wells Road"; lots of boondocking space in the BLM area there and all around. Pay attention to what appears to be "hard surface" but isn't!

The campground in Organ Pipe NM is lovely; large, paved, well-spaced sites, beautiful surroundings, a dump station, water, and nice showers. If one has a "senior" or "access" pass, camping is pretty cheap.

Any "dangers" in this area are overblown; yes, one has to use common sense about where one camps and hikes, but that's the situation pretty much *anywhere*. Stay aware of your surroundings and enjoy the beautiful area!
  • About two miles before the US border patrol check point, on the right as you head towards Organ Pipe, is a BLM camping area nothing there pack it in pack it out. We had no problems Dec 2014.

This place is ok. Guess I don't understand why you don't go ahead and stay in Organ Pipe. The only downside is the limited generator hours.

We will be driving by tomorrow on our way to Mexico so if there is anything wrong, I'll repost.
  • You certainly won't be alone in Why or Ajo areas. Many boondockers out there...beautiful place, as is the park itself.
  • The place that scrubjaysnest is talking about is a great, well known boondocking sight called Gunsight Wash. It's about 2 milse south of Why on the west side just after you cross a large wash. N32° 14.342', W112° 45.037' Drive past the pile of gravel and through the open gate. Plenty of room, flat, solid ground, quiet & peaceful.

  • Just made the drive today. You can even stay at the gravel pit or go to the above coordinates, no problem.
