Glacier NP is a big place. If GTTS is closed and the tours are not running... there are other places to see. Take passports and get up to Waterton, have high tea at Prince of Wales or at least go inside and get a peek out those huge windows to view the lake from there. Take the boat down to Goat Haunt. Get off the boat for a few hours and take a different boat back. There's hiking to do around Goat Haunt..even if you just hike over to the tent / back country tenting area it's super fun because of the swinging bridge.
Visit East Glacier Lodge... (the best one JMHO)... hike around Two Medicine Lake (the bridge on the trail at the other end of the lake is incredible)... then take the boat back. You can see mtn goats on the cliff face from the boat dock.
If you have all the time in the world... take a drive to Polebridge Mercantile & Bakery
265 Polebridge Loop
Polebridge, MT 59928
and have some of the most incredible bakery goods for 50 miles. (there is nothing else up there for at least 60 miles...) But it's a destination to aim for if you don't mind a gravel road at 10mph in a lot of places. We did it in our jeep one time and in our truck camper another time. Both times I said never again...but each time biting into the bakery stuff changed my mind.
I agree still lot to do and see in Glacier, and lots of room to stay upwind of the smoke. Accomodations may be tight with 2 campgrounds closed, however.
And I agree, Polebridge is worth the trip!
