Williamsburg timing

We're thinking of stopping in Williamsburg the second week of April. I thought it would be less crowded while school is still in session, but DH thinks it will be busy with school field trips.

Anybody have any recommendations or ideas? When is the best time to visit if you're not thrilled with crowds?
  • We went in April one year over spring break when the kids were out. It was our very first "roadschooling" experience and we LOVED it.

If there were kid crowds, they didn't bother us or detract from the experience.
  • OP here... Thanks for the replies! We definitely will call the visitor center. Sometimes I forget we don't have to do everything online... :)
  • I'm thinking right about now would be a good time to visit to avoid the crowds or maybe June when school trips are over but the summer rush hasn't started yet.
    X2 on calling them.

We have visited all times of the Year - GO - It is a big place and is popular year round, but we have never been when we did not enjoy it.

Lots to see and do in Many directions.

    Enjoy it NOW,

    Best of Luck,
  • We went to Williamsburg the week after Labor Day a few years ago. There were some crowds but it was OK. It's a tourist town some there will always be some kind of tour groups. But you have at least a half dozen campgrounds to choose from, a number of them highly rated, so finding a nice site should not be a problem. We stayed at the KOA near Williamsburg. We had to put up with a group of school kids camping near us the last night that we were there. They were a bit noisy but we managed.
  • I would call the visitor's center and find out what is scheduled on the days you are considering. I'm sure they could also recommend which days of the weeks are less crowded.

  • April is great, days usually in the 50's nights hgh 30's to 40's. And for all of these temps 10 degrees warmer is not unusual at least later in the month.
School trips can be active, they tend to center on the Governors Mansion and Jamestown.

As far as alternative tme to visit, maybe mid-late May. School year is winding down, most field trips are likely over.
  • I was in Williamburg in the fall season. I would think April would be an excellent time.
  • Williamsburg is beautiful that time of year. Dogwoods and Azaleas blooming everywhere. Many choices for RV Parks.
