Wisconsin campgrounds

We were looking for suggestions for Wisconsin campgrounds. We will be in Wisconsin for a wedding and was going to go up through the UP and then to Sleeping Bear Dunes but thought maybe we should just stay in Wisconsin. We like more of the State and National Parks with trees. Thank you!
  • Asking if Wisconsin Campground has trees is like asking if Anheuser-Busch has beer. We've been to a few state parks in Wisconsin over the years. Every one of them was great! Pick one you're interested in. Go to the Wisconsin DNR web site, select the State Park you're considering, look at the camp ground map, then compare that with Google Earth. You can learn a lot that way.

    Wisconsin camping is fabulous!

Why not make a trip out of it? Sleeping Bear is an awesome park and the whole north western L.P. of Michigan is beautiful. You could do a loop around Lake Michigan tour and hit a few parks in Michigan and Wisconsin. I only say this because it's on my bucket list :)

  • Love the Wisconsin state parks, BUT they are very popular, and they take reservations up to 11 months in advance, so you may find somewhat slim pickings. If you want to work your way up to the UP, check out Harrington Beach SP, and Point Beach State Forest - the latter is one of our favorites.

If you want to stay in Wisconsin & explore the state, our most favorite SP of all is Wyalusing, near the sw corner of the state. Best sites are dry camping in Wisconsin Ridge CG. Others we liked, in no particular order: Willow RIver (near the Twin Cities), Bong (west of Kenosha), Perrot (another Miss. River park), High Cliff (on Lake Winnebago), Kettle Moraine (both north & south units), Council Grounds, Peninsula (one of THE most popular in the state), Potawatomi, and Yellowstone Lake (I couldn't resist). Kohler-Andrae, near Sheboygan, is nice too but is likely to be booked solid.

If the SPs are booked up, I'll post another vote for the Rustic Barn CG as well. Nice little place.
  • Peninsula SP is well forested. Plenty of trails to hike or bike. Beach. Lighthouse. High overlook. Nice place, and plenty to explore nearby.

Nothing wrong with your original idea, either. I get back to Michigan nearly every summer.
  • Don't forget Devil's Lake state park over in the west-central part of the state. Absolutely gorgeous.
  • I agree with the suggestion to do Wisconsin, the UP, and Sleeping Bear Dunes. We started out in Sleeping Bear and did a counter-clockwise loop last year, but you could do the loop in the opposite direction.

    We stayed at:

Platte River CG (NFS) (Sleeping Bear)
Mackinaw Mill Creek CG (to see Mackinac Island)
McLain SP in the UP (on Lake Superior)
Peninsula SP in Door County, Wisconsin

    Had a great time!
  • Don't forget to check out the WI County Parks. Most of these are every bit as good as the State Parks
    and may have better availability.
  • Thank you very much for all the suggestions!
