Mid to late September is the only time we go. The latest time of year we've been there was early October and we woke up to 1/2" of snow. September is a wonderful time of year to go. You see a lot of wildlife and the elk are in rut so you'll not only see but hear bugling. We've stayed at Baker's Hole FS CG just outside the West gate near West Yellowstone and sleep at night with our windows open to hear the elk bugling and have even heard wolves howling. Enjoy!
