Yellowstone RV suggestions

Here's the current info on all the CGs inside the park, including opening and closing dates of the individual parks, amenities, road construction, etc.

Just returned from a week at West Yellowstone KOA. Lovely campground. Full hookup and full service...pool, coffee shop, small restaurant , activities, wifi, cable , etc. six miles from park entrance.we had a premium site with wooden swing, concrete patio, and new concrete round patio table and bench. Lovely. If you need any service in West Yellowstone I recommend Big Sky. They really helped us out of a jam. happy Trails.

Grizzly RV Park is two blocks from the west gate to YNP and has FHUs including cable and WIFI. That time of year is a great time to go, as crowds will be down due to the start of schools. Dress in layers, as it can be a bit nippy in the morning. And that's the time to enter the park. People arriving in the area typically arrive later in the day. The animals are more active in the fall since they don't have to hide in the trees in the heat of the day.
Is it more expensive? Yep. But the sites are roomy. And groceries and souvenirs are cheaper in town than inside the park. Cheaper, but not cheap.
And yes, I know its 12 miles to the Grand Loop, but it isn't a tunnel. One day, it took until noon to get to the loop. Buffalo jams and vehicles stopping to take pictures.
While in West Yellowstone, stop at the Grizzly and Wolf discovery center. There's an entry fee, but its your best chance to see either animal up close. And they're rescue animals. A Grizzly in the wild that kills cattle on private land is hunted down and killed. The center saves them and offers them to zoos around the country.

I finished this evaluation yesterday. I believe that the only FHU in Yellowstone is Fishing Bridge and it is also 54$/(it says 46$+ taxes) night with taxes. The West Yellowstone parks are way less. Most have good reviews, but get to RVpark Reviews and read them yourself. I just added the link the YNP parks, but you have to go back and select Montana for the West Yellowstone parks.

There will be two road closures after labor day. They are very serious and almost crashed our plan. One is the road between West Thumb and Old Faithful and the other is the road that connects Mamouth to Norris. You may chose to look at maps to see how much this will upset things. It says to expect other delays for road work.

As we will be curtailing other aspects of the excursion and not having transportation other than our little coach, the choice was very difficult. We elected to reserve a place at Fishing Bridge. We will be there when they roll up the sidewalks for the winter. We expect that we will only have this one shot. We have to make it count.

For previous posts on this subject search this Forum for `Yellowstone' in the RV Parks section. We stayed at Grizzly.

We have been to Fishing Bridge and Grizzly RV park--both are great. Yes, Grizzly is in a town with all the restaurants, etc. Fishing Bridge puts you in the center of Ystone--that makes it nice and there is a store nearby for basic stuff. I would not expect crowds after Labor Day--and some of the park hotels will be closing--but all the wildlife and geysers just keep on going! Enjoy your trip! Our visits to the park have been in mid September and winter--always fun.

Grizzly is a nice park and they're rates are a little lower in September and not as crowded. What I liked best was the free morning beverages in their clubhouse. But, that aside, there's also Baker's Hole, a FS CG 2 miles North of West Yellowstone outside the park and the majority of the sites have electricity and although no water, there's a fill spigot as you enter with some throughout, if you have a "water thief".
