For me it was the unpredictability - making discoveries that were age old but new to me, among the 1,000 thermal features. The variety, colors, spectacle don't follow precise schedules.
Never heard of Steamboat Geyser until I got there. It's the world's tallest active geyser and it requires a very modest little hike to reach it in Norris Basin. It can go 50 years without erupting, but did it last summer and again a few weeks ago.
Then there were the colors of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone from different viewpoints. Again, modest little hikes to see. Many other places like that.
I think it's good to get out of the car and see what pops up that you didn't know about before.
