Zipping through any national park is like fast forwarding through a movie and only watching the parts that your friends said was exciting. It leaves you flat and not understanding anything about the story.
I'm am in almost as much awe in Yellowstone as I am of Yosemite. I could spend 10 years living there and probably never see it all. There are so many gems in Yellowstone, most of the best requires some back country day hikes. The Lone Star geyser for example is far more impressive than Old Faithful, but it is a 2.5 mile hike one way. Not everyone's cup of tea, but for us that's what places like Yellowstone so exciting to visit. Lots of things to be discovered. Still there is much to see near the road. Those things alone can take most of us the better part of a week to see.
As I said, I am in awe every time I visit Yosemite (been there 3 times). A friend went there and didn't "get it". He thought it was all just a bunch of rocks and sand. But I believe he did the same thing as the OP, just zipped through in a day.
